Last week I was looking for a Christmas present for a rather special little boy and I discovered a  beautiful new book called ‘Here We Are; Notes for Living on Planet Earth’ by writer and artist  Oliver Jeffers. It is such a moving and heartwarming book and it got me thinking about our place on earth and how wonderfully different we all are.

Kindness and Tolerance

Although this book is aimed at young children it’s clear that no matter how old we are the messages of kindness and tolerance in this book resonate for all of us:

  • People are people no matter what they look like

“People come in many shapes, sizes and colours……. We may all look different, act different and sound different … but don’t be fooled, we are all people.”

  • Our earth is precious

Jeffers sends the gentle message that we need to look after the earth (it’s the only one we’ve got) and there’s room for all of us on it!

Pale Blue Dot

The late astronomer Carl Sagan writes about our planet so much more eloquently than I ever could in his pale blue dot monologue.  I will  leave you with this snippet:

” Consider again that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”
