When I check my social media, just now the feeds are full of new year resolutions. Lots of these posts are shouting about a change of diet or lifestyle. Fair enough, but honestly I’m getting somewhat tired of them. How about you?

Recently, I’ve been reading Rachel Cusks new book called Coventry. In her essay of the same name, she contrasts noisy people to quiet ones.
It’s got me thinking how people posting about new years resolutions can be noisy. These posts shout loud and demand our attention.

I’m wondering if, when we get swept into the ‘noise’ of our new year resolutions we lose or perhaps drown out what Rachel describes as the shy words. Words such as empathy, mercy, gentleness and solicitude.

I think these quiet, shy quiet words are powerful. I want to add some more. How about compassion, joy, forgiveness, vulnerability, courage, faith, honesty, comfort, kindness, comfort, stillness and love.

So as we move through January and onwards into 2020, I’m going to be contemplating these words more and more. All these words are those I aim to bring into my work with people, but I’m wondering how we can we bring these quiet words of power into daily life, every day.

As we go forward into 2020, whether you make new years resolutions or not; let’s look for these powerful words amongst all the noise and busyness. I know they are there.

If you’d like to work with me in 2020 then you are very welcome to contact me.

May I wish you health and happiness for the new year.
